Aglobis sources, markets, and distributes sulfur and sulfuric acid. The company operates a storage tank terminal at Europoort in Rotterdam. Unlike the standard ten-year tank maintenance check interval, Aglobis conducts these inspections every five years to ensure the highest levels of quality and safety.
J de Jonge’s TankX division was nominated and entrusted by Aglobis to design and execute the maintenance project of one of their sulfuric acid tanks at Europoort in Rotterdam.
The sulfuric acid tanks are unique due to their double bottom and double walls, essential for safely storing the acidic product. This unique design required meticulous planning for maintenance activities. Aglobis required a reliable partner to perform the extensive maintenance tasks, including wall repair and double bottom replacement, while ensuring the highest quality and safety standards.
TankX began the project with a kick-off meeting to craft a detailed action plan. The first task was to repair the storage tank walls to ensure they were completely leak-proof. TankX designed a test and inspection plan, executed NDT inspections, and installed wall detection systems to ensure the tank’s integrity.
Next, the team focused on replacing the double tank bottom. A bottom compartment was created, all welds were vacuum boxed, and multiple tests were conducted to ensure there were no potential leaks. Additionally, preventive maintenance activities were performed to guarantee the long-term integrity of the tank.
Throughout the project, all activities were executed following the required quality and safety standards to meet the highest performance benchmarks.
After hard work and dedication, the TankX team successfully executed the preventive maintenance activities ahead of schedule.
Next, the tank will undergo thorough cleaning, and final instruments will be installed and tested. Once these instruments meet all requirements, the tank will be ready for use again.
