DEME is a global leader in offshore energy, dredging, marine infrastructure, and environmental projects. They operate one of the largest and most advanced fleets in the industry. DEME Luxembourg asked our team to conduct critical repairs on the underwater pump motor of Dredge Pump 3 (DP3) aboard the vessel Ambiorix.
The primary task was the machining of the outer pump casing, which required precision work to restore functionality to this key piece of equipment.
The project presented the significant challenge of performing on-site circular milling on a diameter of 2,680 mm to create a chamber of precise dimensions. Complications included the presence of cracks in the pump casing discovered during initial disassembly and the necessity of adapting milling speeds for varied materials.
Additionally, achieving the correct material hardness involved intermittent annealing, adding complexity to the machining process.
The scope involved repairing significant cracks in the pump casing. This required milling a circular chamber 60 mm wide and 50 mm deep to accommodate a prefabricated metal ring, which was subsequently welded into place. After welding, the ring and surrounding surface were machined back to specification to ensure compatibility with the pump’s operational requirements.
The annealing process to achieve the correct hardness added further intricacy, as post-annealing machining required precise adjustments to milling parameters to prevent material damage.
While the execution ran one week over schedule due to on-site challenges, the repair was completed successfully. The vessel was restored to full operational capacity, with the repair meeting all required specifications.
The collaborative daily communication with the client ensured transparency and alignment, leading to a satisfied client despite the extended timeline.
This project highlights our ability to deliver high-precision repairs under challenging conditions, ensuring quality outcomes even in demanding environments.
