ERC Upgrade for Loading Arms

About Client

The client, a company based in Germany, operated loading arms that did not comply with ERC (Emergency Release Coupling) regulations. Government requirements mandated the decommissioning of any arms without ERC within a specified timeframe.

The client was highly satisfied with their current arms and preferred upgrading them to meet regulations rather than replacing them entirely.

Challenge

The challenge lay in ensuring the entire range of loading arms met compliance requirements within the allotted time. The client needed to retrofit four arms per year, each equipped with an ERC.

The engineering study revealed that the arms required reinforcements and modifications at various critical points to accommodate the new systems effectively.

Scope of work

JLS was tasked with retrofitting four arms annually to comply with the new regulations. This included one 16-inch arm, two 12-inch arms, and one 10-inch arm.

The work involved reinforcing specific sections of the arms, upgrading the hydraulic systems to integrate with the ERC systems, and revising components intended for reuse.

JLS collaborated with JMEC for engineering support and JLA for the supply of new TSAs with ERC functionality.

The Result

The project successfully delivered and installed four retrofitted loading arms, fully compliant with the new ERC regulations.
