Pump Solutions for Diverse Chemical Terminal

About Client

HLP, in collaboration with Bilfinger, was invited to develop optimization calculations for a new chemical terminal. The terminal was designed to store and handle a wide variety of chemical products. The client sought expert engineering support to meet their specific needs while adhering to the highest safety and efficiency standards.

Our Activities

  • Pump skid design
  • Optimization calculations
  • Engineering pump systems

Challenge

Our biggest challenge was ensuring the terminal was capable of handling over 40 different chemicals, each with unique properties in density and viscosity. This diversity made the pump selection highly complex. Additionally, the client’s requirement that all pumps must be interchangeable made the project both fascinating and demanding.

Scope of work

HLP engineered complete pump skids, including pumps, motors, seals, and API Plan 53B seal systems, integrated with cooling and pump heating systems. These skids were designed to meet ATEX standards for safe operation in explosive environments.

The pump systems were optimized for a wide range of fluid properties, ensuring reliability across varying viscosities, densities, flow rates, and pressures. Each system was engineered to operate efficiently within the specified capacity range of 20 to 250 m³/h and pressures up to 16 bar, with power efficiency ranging from 70% to 82%.

The Result

HLP designed a modular pump system constructed entirely from stainless steel (RVS) to serve all 40 tanks. Each tank contains a unique liquid with unique properties and is equipped with its own dedicated pump.

The pumps are fully interchangeable and can be customized on-site with a range of options.
