AFT Biodiesel Storage Tank Repurposing

About Burando Atlantic Group

Amsterdam Fuel Terminals (AFT) provides extensive storage options in key locations throughout Europe. As part of the Burando Atlantic Group, AFT is committed to helping customers navigate the ever-changing waters of the maritime industry. They specialize in providing lower carbon fuels, transporting goods, and recycling waste streams as new raw materials.

AFT wanted to repurpose its storage tanks for storing biodiesel. To enhance the operational availability of the storage tanks, solid expertise and a professional tank turnaround strategy were essential.

Our Activities

  • Jacking
  • Foundation activities
  • Roof replacement

Challenge

To meet the new demands of biodiesel storage, modifications to the facilities and tank specifications were necessary. AFT required expert guidance and assistance in repurposing their tanks to handle the specific requirements of biodiesel, ensuring the tanks met operational and environmental standards.

TankX was nominated and entrusted with the task of repurposing the storage tanks.

Scope of work

Before starting the project, we kicked off with a detailed action plan and coordinated timelines to ensure a smooth process. Our engineering team developed conceptual, basic and detailed plans, including equipment specifications, datasheets and 3D piping and steel construction designs using AutoCAD Plant 3D.

With these plans, we got to work. Our construction team jacked up storage tanks using mechanical and civil techniques. Once jacked, they installed a new ring foundation with HDPE liners and a new ring wall. For another tank, TankX installed a completely new roof, including the roof structure. The steel roof foundation was prefabricated on-site and welded to the top of the tank once completed. The team then proceeded with waterproofing the roof to ensure its durability and functionality.

Throughout the project, LexRent, a J. de Jonge subsidiary, supplied power, lighting, and certified tools, guaranteeing 24/7 operational support and strict adherence to safety standards.

The Result

The project is progressing well, and on-site activities are ongoing. The project team is adhering to the action plan and is on schedule. As the project advances, new tasks are identified and integrated into the scope of work.

TankX continues to prioritize quality and safety throughout the process. The team’s dedication ensures maximum value for the client, and together, they are making significant strides in transitioning the functionality of the traditional tanks to a more environmentally friendly alternative, supporting AFT’s shift towards biodiesel storage.
