Jetty and Hose Loading Arm Installation at ATM

About Afvalstoffen Terminal Moerdijk part of Renewi

Afvalstoffen Terminal Moerdijk (ATM), part of Renewi, is investing €7.8 million in a new jetty to strengthen its position. The jetty, due for completion in November 2024, will enhance operational efficiency and is a key part of ATM’s ongoing maintenance investments. The project is designed to boost the terminal’s capacity, with the jetty allowing up to six ships to moor simultaneously, increasing throughput by 15%.

Our Activities

  • Design study
  • Detailed engineering
  • Project management for safe, high-quality, and timely delivery
  • Delivery of equipment
  • Installation and commissioning

Challenge

The main challenge was determining the most efficient, safe, and regulatory-compliant loading equipment for an existing narrow jetty.

ATM needed a solution to optimize operational efficiency while enhancing safety and minimizing downtime.

Scope of work

JLA was invited to discuss the possibility of using a hose tower for the new jetty. Through a design study, JLA identified that a hose loading arm would be a more suitable solution for loading processes. This study helped assess the best practices for loading operations, improve safety, reduce costs, and increase workflow efficiency.

Once the study confirmed the suitability of the hose loading arm, JLA proceeded with delivering all specifications, ensuring regulatory compliance, and adhering to a fast-track timeline for production, installation, and commissioning.

The Result

The project was completed on time and within budget, with the installation of six new electrically driven hose loading arms. These arms feature a 13.5-meter height, with a working range from the jetty to 7 meters deep. They include a swivel for easy ship connection and an electric winch with a standstill heater for winter operation. A safety ladder with fall protection ensures safe maintenance.

The client expressed satisfaction with the final outcome, particularly appreciating the design’s functionality, safety, and aesthetics. As the client stated:

“Besides being functionally very safe, reliable, and easy to operate, it also has a beautiful design.”

The new jetty and loading arms enhance operational safety and efficiency while reducing the environmental impact of the loading process.
