Successful Condenser Renovation at Shell Site

About Shell

Heat Exchanger Service successfully completed a challenging renovation project for Shell at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam. The task involved removing 3,400 old tubes from a condenser that had not been maintained since 1996. The project required high-level expertise, precise planning, and strong perseverance to overcome the complex challenges presented bythe aging equipment and workenvironment.

Our Activities

  • Retubing of a condenser with 3,400 tubes
  • 27 tons of materials
  • Equipment repair
  • Special equipment
  • 6,800 tubes rolled in tube sheet without any leakages

Challenge

The condenser’s outdated condition posed significant challenges, including severe corrosionand tubes that were firmly stuck, making their removal particularly difficult.

Additionally, the condenser’s location on scaffolding posed logistical issues for transporting and using heavy tools, and the tight deadline of six weeks added further pressure to complete the task on time. Moreover, strict safety and environmental regulations at the Shell site had to be adhered to throughout the project.

Scope of work

To address these challenges, a team of ten experienced technicians worked in shifts, ensuring continuous progress without compromising safety. Specialized tools such as hydraulic tubepullers and precision cutters were used to remove the old tubes safely and efficiently.

The renovation work focused on both safety and quality, adhering to stringent safety protocols to avoid incidents. The project was executed with careful planning and attention to detail, ensuring the condenser was leak-free post-renovation.

The team also managed the transportation and installation of 27 tons of materials needed for the job.

The Result

The project was completed within the six-week timeframe, ensuring minimal disruption to Shell’s operations. The work was executed without any safety incidents, demonstrating the team’s commitment to risk management and safety standards.

After extensive post-renovation testing, the condenser was confirmed to be entirely leak-free, ensuring long-term reliability. Shell expressed high satisfaction with the project’s quality, timely completion, and seamless execution, solidifying a professional and trusting partnership for future collaborations.
